The house was built before air conditioning was available and so it did not have the proper dimensions for ductwork to be added for a traditional HVAC system. However, the gas heating system had served the house well for many years.
Unfortunately, the gas heating system was outdated and expensive to run, so the homeowners were ready to upgrade their house to something more efficient. Researching the possibilities led them to consider a ductless heating and cooling system.

The Problem: This 100-year-old home needed a replacement for its gas heating system and an efficient air conditioning solution that didn’t take away from the home’s aesthetic.
The Solution: N.E.T.R., Inc., installed a multi-zone Mitsubishi ductless heating and cooling system in four rooms of the home to give them total control over their comfort no matter what.
The Design
The team at N.E.T.R., Inc., toured the home and found that four rooms needed indoor air handlers to efficiently keep the house comfortable. The master bedroom and baby’s room would both need wall mounted units so that the family could have pinpoint control over the temperature and humidity in these rooms. Additionally, the living room and gym would also need ductless units.
Lastly, the team found a great place to install the Mitsubishi ductless heat pump on the left side of the home. This location would keep it out of the way but make it easy to access for maintenance and repairs.
The Installation
The first thing the team at N.E.T.R., Inc., did for this installation was to pour the concrete pad for the outdoor condenser unit. This cold-climate heat pump must be mounted on a level concrete pad so that it can be kept out of the way of snow throughout the year.
Once the condenser unit for this ductless mini-split system was installed, refrigerant piping was run along the outside of the home and covered with line cover to blend it into the siding. The new refrigerant piping helps this energy-efficient HVAC system supply the house with perfectly treated air quickly and uses less power than traditional systems.
Inside the home, the ductless units were installed in each of the four rooms. Before the unit could be mounted on the wall, a tiny hole is drilled, and the piping is snaked through like electrical wiring. This piping connects the ductless mini-split to the outdoor heat pump and distributes the air through the room.
