Andover Home Gets Hybrid Heating and Cooling System

This colonial home in Andover, MA, gets a hybrid ductless and ducted heating and air conditioning system from N.E.T.R., Inc. Sometimes the existing system in a home is almost the right fit for what it needs to keep the owners comfortable. That was the case for this colonial home in Andover, MA. The existing gas heat kept the home relatively comfortable in the winter, but the lack of a central air conditioning system left the family sticky and hot all through the summer.

Instead of suffering through another summer of being uncomfortable in their own home, these homeowners decided to give N.E.T.R., Inc., a call and see if our experts could design a heating and cooling system for them. After seeing the house, the team decided that a hybrid ducted, and ductless system would offer the best solution for the owners. This design would include a new air handler in the attic, which would serve the second floor, and ductless units in the first-floor rooms.

Let’s look at how N.E.T.R., Inc., tackled this project and brought year-round comfort to this home in Andover, MA.

The Problem: The existing gas heat in this home was almost enough to keep the family warm in the winter; however, the lack of air conditioning made the owners decide it was time for a change. They wanted a heating and cooling system that would keep them comfortable all year long.

The Solution: N.E.T.R., Inc., installed a new air handler in the attic to create a ducted system for the second floor. The first floor received ductless wall-mounted units to complete the hybrid heating and cooling system for the entire home and provide an energy efficient solution.

The team at N.E.T.R., Inc., knew that this home would work best with a hybrid system because of the existing gas heat. Because of the home was two-stories, any system installed would need to be a two-zone design. For this solution, all the team would need to do to improve the comfort level of the home was to install a new air handler, some ductwork to link it in for the upstairs, and a few ductless units in the downstairs rooms.

The outdoor Mitsubishi heat pump with cold climate heating capabilities would be able to provide the heated or cooled air to both zones easily. Once the homeowners approved this design, the team was able to start the installation.

The Installation

An example of an indoor ductless unit installed in an Andover, MA, home. Starting the installation of the new system, the team at N.E.T.R., Inc., removed any parts of the gas heat system that would no longer be necessary. Next, they set up the new Mitsubishi air handler with 24,000 BTUs for heating and cooling the second floor. The team also installed all the necessary ductwork to pipe the air to the rooms that need it most.

Next, the first floor was equipped with a ductless unit in the living room and a second ductless unit in the family room. Both of these heating and cooling units operate independently from one another and the second-floor ducted system, so it will be easy for the family to create a comfortable space in every room of their home.

Once the wall mounted ductless units were installed, the piping was run through the wall to connect the unit to the outdoor heat pump. From there, the team laid line hide over all the pipes to keep the home looking clean and neat all around. Additionally, the team installed all new refrigerant and drain piping for the systems, mounted the remote controls for the ductless units, and charged the system with R410a refrigerant before starting it up and testing each new unit.

The Benefits

Because these homeowners opted to upgrade an outdated heating system the team at N.E.T.R., Inc., helped them apply for a rebate for installing a more eco-friendly system. The rebate this family qualified for was $1,000 and helped to offset the cost of installation so they’ll be able to see savings on their energy bills in no time!

The ductless system on the first floor is fitted with Mitsubishi Electric wall-mounted units for heating and cooling the rooms. These units are some of the most energy efficient option for comfort control on the market today and provide high-quality relief for a fraction of the energy that standard system require. Additionally, the ductless units operate independently from one another, so it’s easy to set the temperature higher in the family room and lower in the living room to keep everyone comfortable.

The upstairs Mitsubishi ducted will ensure the homeowners’ bedrooms stay perfectly comfortable year-round, so they’ll never have to worry about waking up chilly in the winter or sweating in the summer.
