The Design
After meeting with the family and touring the home, the team at N.E.T.R., Inc. knew that a Mitsubishi ductless heating system would be ideal for this family. The ductless units can be installed to work in tandem with the existing oil heat to allow for precise control over the home’s heating. The entire supplemental heating system would require three indoor units and a single outdoor condenser, as well as refrigerant piping to get the treated air to the desired room.
The system would be unique in that it would incorporate a ducted unit in the attic and two ductless units in the living room and the basement. This design took advantage of the existing ductwork to increase the efficiency of the installation by using what was already installed. Instead of removing the ductwork, the N.E.T.R., Inc. team used it to conduct the air from the attic unit to the upper-level floors.
The Installation
The attic unit was the only ducted Mitsubishi unit installed in this home. It was connected to the existing system to help provide supplemental heat to the upper rooms.
Outside, the outdoor condenser unit was installed on a concrete pad where it would be easy to access for maintenance but out of the way. This condenser features some of the most sophisticated, energy-efficient heating and cooling technology available on the market today. It operates by transferring the existing heat in the outdoor air through the piping, which heats it to the desired temperature. From there, it is pushed through the tubing, which is installed in the walls like electrical wiring, to the air handlers.
Each Mitsubishi ductless wall AC unit is installed with a simple mount and a small hole drilled into the wall behind it. This hole is where the tubing is connected to allow the air to pass through the unit. In this case, two ductless ACs were installed in the home. One was placed on the living room wall, while the other was mounted in the basement.
The homeowners also required the new system to be easy to control, so N.E.T.R., Inc. installed a Kumo cloud station to help the oil heating system, ducted unit, and ductless supplemental units to operate seamlessly. Now, the Mitsubishi ductless units will heat the home until the temperatures drop below 25 degrees Farenheight when the oil heating system kicks in.
