Colonial Home in Needham, MA, Ditches Window Units for Ductless AC

Heating with gas is a common practice in homes throughout the Boston area. This method of heating often provides quick, effective heating. However, it is sometimes less than ideal for a specific home.

This family in Needham, MA found that the gas heating system in their colonial home was leaving hot and cold spots throughout the house. Some rooms would stay nice and toasty all winter, while others were drafty and cold. In addition to their heating problems, the home was built before central AC was standard, and they had no room for the ductwork required to install a centralized system.

This dilemma left the homeowners to rely on window air conditioning units to try and stay cool in the summers. The window ACs racked up huge energy bills, were noisy and disruptive, and did not cool the home adequately. After growing tired of installing and uninstalling the window units throughout the year, the family decided that enough was enough.

Problem: Window AC units were loud, expensive to run, and did a poor job of cooling this colonial home in Needham, MA. Additionally, the home’s gas heating system was leaving hot and cold spots throughout the house.

Solution: Mike Cappuccio of N.E.T.R., Inc. designed a system for this home using five indoor ductless AC units and a single condenser with a Hyper-Heating heat pump. This zoned ductless system will provide both heating and air conditioning.

Zoned Ductless ACs with Hyper-Heating Example of indoor ductless AC

The owners finally decided that it was time to find a more permanent solution to their air conditioning problem. They began researching their options and found N.E.T.R., Inc. in Boston. The owners read many reviews from customers just like them who were thrilled with their new ductless systems. N.E.T.R., Inc. is ranked as the #1 Mitsubishi Electric Elite Diamond Dealer in the Boston area, which allows our experts to offer extended warranties and premium service for all our customers.

Mike met with the homeowners to discuss their new system. He designed a multi-zoned ductless air conditioning system with a Hyper-Heating heat pump. These ductless units will replace the old window ACs and provide supplemental heating in the winter.

The Hyper-Heating technology used in these units makes them some of the most efficient heat pumps on the market. They have been proven to work in temperatures as low as -13 degrees!

The Installation

N.E.T.R., Inc. set to work installing the indoor units in each of the separate rooms. The master bedroom, dining room, Needham home gets ductless heating and cooling systemand living room on the main floor each required ductless ACs. The upstairs office and second bedroom also received separate units. The tubing for each of these ductless ACs would be piped through the walls to the outdoor condenser.

This design would allow the owners to get quality heating and air conditioning without the need for installing extensive ductwork. The family also requested that the outdoor unit have no visible piping running to it since that might interfere with the beauty of the exterior.

Mike and his team considered this request and modified the standard installation to run the piping through the exterior walls instead. The owners could not be happier with the result, which gave them the comfort they need and kept their house looking beautiful inside and out!

Now, the owners can enjoy supplemental heating in the winter in addition to high-quality air conditioning. The family will no longer have to deal with noisy window ACs since the ductless units are whisper-quiet. We’ve even installed ductless systems in recording studios!

The Benefits

By getting rid of the inefficient window air conditioning units and swapping them for the ductless heating and cooling system, this family will see huge savings on their energy bills throughout the year. Because the air handlers are wall-mounted, they can be positioned to provide the best air circulation, which increases efficiency.

Each ductless unit will be controlled independently from the other units. This flexibility allows the family to keep the kitchen cool and their bedrooms toasty, without the struggle of a single thermostat for the entire home. Instead, they canOutdoor heat pump with Hyper-Heating technology in Needham, MA adjust each room to their taste with the touch of a button on the remote control. They can even turn off the heating and cooling to rooms that are not in use, saving the owners even more on their energy costs.

In addition to the monthly savings, the Mitsubishi Electric ductless AC system is so energy-efficient that it qualifies some families for rebates! These homeowners were able to claim $500 through Mass Save and $2,500 from Mass CEC. In total, the family was able to take $3,000 off the cost of upgrading their home from window units to the ductless mini-split system.
