The owners of this quaint ranch-style home in Needham, MA, were getting tired of the struggling to keep their house cool during the hot summer months. The home was built without a central air system, and the ductwork required to install such a solution would involve intensive construction to the house. So, they had been using window air conditioners to try to keep cool.
Unfortunately, these window ACs were extremely inefficient and left hot and cold spots throughout the house. The units were also expensive to run and left the homeowners will massive energy bills during the summer. Additionally, the window ACs filled up their beautiful windows, blocking the view, and presented a potential security threat to their house. Burglars have been known to use window units as an entry point for a home.
After considering the negatives of the noisy window air conditioners, the Wong family knew it was time for a better solution.

Solution: N.E.T.R., Inc. installed a two-unit Mitsubishi ductless mini-split AC system with an outdoor heat pump for supplemental heating.

Chip Moeckel, the project manager, met with the Wong family to discuss their new ductless system. He and his team designed a mini-split ductless system with two indoor air conditioners and a single outdoor condenser unit. This system would allow the owners to have pin-point control over the temperature in the living/dining room and the bedroom that needed cooling.
The ductless ACs are controlled by a remote, so they are easy to adjust from anywhere in the room. The units are mounted on the wall to give them the best vantage point for air circulation. These Mitsubishi air conditioners also monitor the humidity in the room and adjust to provide premium comfort.
Chip and his team installed the first AC unit in the living room, which doubled as the dining room. The other AC was mounted on the wall in the bonus bedroom. The outdoor condenser was placed on the left side of the home, where it would not interfere with the home’s curb appeal.
Then, the thin tubing used to conduct the air from the condenser to the air handlers was piped through the walls like electrical wiring. This process was much less invasive than installing new ductwork and will provide better cooling than the window ACs the owners were previously using.
Another benefit of the Mitsubishi ductless system is that it is whisper-quiet. Unlike window ACs, which rattle and shake as they run, the ductless system is quiet enough to install in recording studios!
That’s not all! These Mitsubishi Electric ACs also double as state-of-the-art heat pumps in the winter! With the ability to function in temperatures a low at -13 degrees, these homeowners won’t have to worry about their comfort any time of year.
One of the best things about upgrading to a ductless system is the energy savings you’ll see every month. Not only are ductless ACs more effective at distributing the treated air, but they are energy efficient. Many homeowners see their monthly bills lower after upgrading to ductless.
Additionally, there are rebates available for families that upgrade their home systems to the more environmentally friendly ductless heating and air conditioning. N.E.T.R., Inc. was able to help this family find $400 in rebates from programs like Mass Save.
