Westwood High School Replaces Walk In Cooler System

Westwood High School, home of the Wolverines, is an excellent school that serves a quaint suburb of Boston. Westwood, MA, is just twelve miles south of Boston and offers a quiet lifestyle, without having to venture too far from the big city.

Westwood High School has over 2,500 students, which means a lot of mouths to feed during lunch. Unfortunately, the cafeteria’s twenty-year-old walk-in cooler system was beginning to fail. For the health and safety of their students, a new system needed to be installed quickly and efficiently.

Old refrigeration system replaced in Westwood, MA, high school. New evaporator coil and refrigerant piping in cafeteria walk-in cooler.

In order to find the best service for their refrigeration needs, the school researched local refrigeration installation companies. They eventually found N.E.T.R., Inc., and knew from the many customer reviews from other business owners, that we would be able to design a solution to fit their needs.

The Problem: Westwood High School’s 20-year-old walk-in cooler and freezer system were failing. Since the school year meant hundreds of students to feed every day, they needed a solution fast!

The Solution: N.E.T.R., Inc. replaced the leaking evaporator coil and installed a new outdoor condenser and piping to keep the walk-in operating perfectly.

The Design

Mike Cappuccio, the founder, and owner of N.E.T.R., Inc., took on this project himself.  Mike met with the school before the project began to observe the failing refrigeration system and come up with a solution.

Immediately, he discovered that the evaporator coil was leaking significantly. After some investigation, he informed the client that the damage was too bad to warrant repairs. Instead, it would be cheaper for the school to replace the entire evaporator coil and install a new outdoor condenser unit.

The new unit would be more efficient than the design from 20 years ago, and they would be able to ensure that food temperatures stayed perfectly regulated. Additionally, he proposed installing refrigerant piping to ensure the entire system was in optimal condition.

The Installation

Westwood High School upgrades its refrigeration system. After discussing his designs with the client, Mike and his team began the process of removing the failing equipment. Inside the walk-in cooler, they removed the evaporator coil and the interior pipework.

Outside, the team prepared the site for installing the new outdoor condenser unit. The unit needed to be installed near the walk-in but remain out of the way for everyday activities. Additionally, the condenser needed to be easily accessible for maintenance and repairs.

N.E.T.R., Inc.’s team of experts found the ideal location and set about installing the new system right away. After the indoor and outdoor units were installed, the team ran new refrigerant piping between the two units to allow optimal airflow between them.

The Benefits

Thanks to the upgraded technology, the new walk-in refrigeration system will keep the students’ meals properly cooled every day, but it will also save Westwood High money in the long run.

The newer technology used in these outdoor condensers operates much more efficiently than older systems. Because most refrigeration and air conditioning systems now utilize heat-exchange systems, it takes much less energy to convert air to the desired temperatures.

The heat-exchange system works by using the outdoor condenser to pull cool air from the outside into the unit. From there, the temperature of the air is reduced, using refrigerant, and then pumped through the piping to the indoor air handler.

N.E.T.R., Inc. helps Westwood, MA, school upgrade their refrigeration system. The indoor unit evenly distributes the treated air throughout the space, keeping the walk-in perfectly chilled. The decision to replace the refrigerant piping also helped to improve the efficiency of the entire system. The new piping will be insulated better and reduce the loss of energy during transmission from the exterior unit to the walk-in cooler.

Now, the school will have a dependable system that can easily be reached for routine maintenance and will offer excellent cooling for years to come.
