Top Signs Your Hot Water Heater Needs Repair
Contact our qualified water heater repair technicians if you notice any of the following:
There’s No Hot Water
The most common sign that something is wrong with your water heater is a lack of hot water. If you turn on your faucet and only get cold water, this could be due to a burned-out heating element, a faulty thermostat, or even something as simple as a flipped breaker switch.
Your Water Only Gets Warm
If your water heater is getting your water warm but not hot, this is another indicator that something is amiss inside. If your thermostat or water heater settings aren’t the issue, and you have a traditional tank heater, check to see if there’s too much sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. This can cover up the heating element and prevent the water from reaching the right temperature.
Your Water Is Dirty or Discolored
If the water coming out of your taps is brown, dirty, or otherwise discolored, this could be a sign of sediment and mineral deposits in your heater. It could also indicate that your water heater is corroding inside, especially if the color gets darker or more pronounced when you turn on your hot water.
Unfortunately, you can’t just filter your drinking water and leave the issue for later — rust will eventually eat holes through the metal and cause water leakage.
Your Water Pressure Is Low
If you notice that your hot water pressure is much lower than your cold water pressure, there could be a clog somewhere or one of the valves inside your water heater could be malfunctioning. We can flush your system and repair any internal components that aren’t working properly.
Your Hot Water Runs Out Too Fast
Is your hot water starting to run out much faster than it used to? This could be the result of sediment buildup at the bottom of your tank. As mineral deposits take up more and more space, there is less room for hot water, causing you to run out earlier than you normally would. It’s also possible there’s a problem with the heating element or the dip tube that separates hot and cold water.
There’s Water Leaking From the Unit
Water that is starting to leak out of your tank or pool around the base of it is a major issue that requires immediate repair. There are several problems that could potentially cause this, including corrosion, a faulty drain valve, anode rod failure, or loose gaskets. Addressing leaks right away prevents water from damaging your flooring and creating even bigger problems.
Should I Repair or Replace My Water Heater?
In some cases, repairing a water heater might be more expensive and less effective than replacing it. This is more likely when:
- Fixing your water heater will cost 50% more than a new one
- You have to repair your water heater every season
- Your hot water heater is more than 10 years old
- You see rust or your water has a reddish-brown tint
- Your water has a foul odor, like rotten eggs
- You have a gas water heater
While repairing your water heater can resolve serious issues and extend its lifespan, replacement is often a wiser choice when your existing heater is nearing the end of its life or has plagued you with persistent problems that refuse to stay fixed for long.
