Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair
Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling My Space?
Refrigerant Leak
Refrigerant is a liquid that facilitates heat transfer and your air conditioner won’t work properly without it. If you have a leak, there won’t be enough refrigerant cycling through your system to remove heat from your space. This can leave your space feeling hot and sticky in the summertime.
Running your system without enough refrigerant can cause permanent damage to your equipment that requires expensive repairs. Some signs you might have a leak include iced-over coils, increased electric expenses, and a bubbling or hissing sound coming from your unit.
Dirty Condenser Coils
Your AC’s condenser coils are responsible for releasing heat that is absorbed by liquid refrigerant. When these are covered in dirt, grime, or ice, your system will have a more difficult time completing the heat exchange process. You may notice that your air conditioner can’t reach the temperature you set or that your electric bills are going up as your system works harder to maintain your desired temperature.
Regular system maintenance can help keep your AC clean and working efficiently so you can have peace of mind that your space will stay comfortable all summer long.
Clogged Air Filters
If your AC’s filters are clogged, your unit won’t be able to run properly or keep your space cool enough for you to stay comfortable. This also causes your system to work harder to push air through layers of dirt and pet hair, which leads to increased energy use and more strain on your equipment over time. The longer you run your air conditioner with a dirty filter, the higher the risk of needing future repairs will be.
Wrong Size Unit
Your air conditioner needs to be the right size for your space to keep it cool. If the unit is too small, it will run continuously without shutting off when outdoor temps are high. Even then, it will struggle to maintain your comfort and drive up your electric expenses. If it’s too large, it will start to short cycle.
This results in higher indoor humidity and temperature fluctuations as the system repeatedly cools your space, shuts off, and lets the room warm back up before turning on again.
Fan Belt Failure
The fan belt in your air conditioner is what turns the fan blade and helps blow cool air into your space. This component naturally gets a lot of wear and tear over time. If you notice your AC starts making strange noises or the airflow coming out of your vents feels weaker, it might be due to a fan belt malfunction — especially if both occur together.
Outdated System
Sometimes, an old air conditioner doesn’t work as well as it used to or just stops working altogether. This could be the result of worn-out components or outdated technology that makes it harder for your AC to meet today’s cooling demands. In this case, it might be better to replace your unit instead of continuing to spend money on repairs that only provide marginal improvement.
