Learn More About Ductless Mini-Splits

What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

A ductless mini-split is a complete heating and cooling system that incorporates two main components – an air handler mounted to the inside of an exterior wall and an outdoor condenser. Two lines run between these units to control the flow of refrigerant and where heat is released. A wireless control unit allows you to adjust the indoor unit’s temperature, fan speed, and more with the touch of a button.

Ductless HVAC systems are quiet, easy to install, and are ideal for new additions, renovated spaces, garage or basement rooms, and any property that can’t accommodate ductwork.

Indoor units can be installed anywhere in the room, including on ceilings, walls, and floors. Outdoor units are available in multiple capacities and can be camouflaged to maintain the aesthetic of your home.

How Does a Ductless Mini-Split Compare to Central HVAC?

With a ductless system, the amount of cool or warm air that enters a room is controlled via a wireless remote. Each unit can be set to a different temperature to save energy or meet individual needs.

With a central HVAC, treated air is distributed to every room the same way through a system of ducts. This makes it impossible to control the amount of cool air in a single room without changing the temperature of every other room. Plus, air ducts distribute potentially harmful particles like allergens and VOCs throughout your space, which reduces the quality of your indoor air and puts you at risk for possible health issues.

With a ductless mini-split, you can benefit from better indoor air and little to no temperature fluctuation no matter the season.

Why Choose a Mini-Split Air Conditioner Over a Window Unit

Ductless systems also offer superior cooling compared to a window AC unit. Since window ACs must be placed in a window, this reduces the amount of natural light you get and prevents you from getting fresh air.

Installing a window AC unit is also a security risk. An intruder could easily remove the unit from the outside to gain access to your property, putting your family and valuables in jeopardy. Ductless systems are mounted on the wall, so you don’t have to block a window during the summer or make your space vulnerable.

FAQs

How long does mini-split installation take?

In most cases, installing a mini-split only takes between 4 to 8 hours. Rarely will it take more than one day to get your new system completely set up. However, this time can vary depending on how many indoor units you’re getting and if any special modifications are required.

How many units will I need?

The number of indoor mini-splits you’ll need depends on how large your space is and how many individual temperature zones you want to have. For example, if you have a small apartment, you may only need two indoor units — one for the living area and one for the bedroom.

If you have a much larger house or a commercial building you’re outfitting with ductless, you may need three or more units. A typical three-bedroom house with a basement might need 6 units — one for the living room, one for the kitchen, one for the basement, and one for eac

Where is the best place to put a mini-split?

The best location for an indoor ductless unit is typically on the inside of an exterior wall a few inches from the ceiling where it can evenly distribute air. The outdoor unit should be placed away from the building on level ground with plenty of clearance around it.

Will you have to cut a hole in my wall?

Each indoor unit that is installed will need a small opening in the wall to feed the refrigerant lines through so they can be connected to the outdoor condenser. These are usually no more than 3 inches in diameter.
