Historic Home Gets Heat Pump with Cold Climate Capabilities

The Problem: This Victorian home in North Andover, MA, was built in the 1900s and was in need of some upgrades to keep the homeowners comfortable all year long. The oil heating system struggled to keep up, and there was no AC, leaving the family hot on summer days.

The Solution: N.E.T.R., Inc. designed a multi-zone system with an outdoor heat pump with cold climate capabilities to offer ductless heating and cooling relief throughout the home. This installation also preserved the natural beauty of the house.

The Design

Because preserving the home’s historic beauty was the priority in this design, the comfort specialists at N.E.T.R., Inc. knew that the Mitsubishi ductless system was a perfect fit. The outdoor heat pump would offer cold climate capability in addition to high-quality supplemental heating to the oil heat system.

The home’s interior needed five ductless wall units to provide the best comfort throughout the house. Each of these units would be mounted on the walls, out of the way, where they could give the best airflow throughout the space.

Lastly, the entire system would need individual remotes for each unit to offer the family precise control over every room of the house.

The Installation

This beautiful Victorian home was in fantastic condition for the age of the house, so N.E.T.R., Inc. knew that maintaining that pristine curb appeal and the inviting interior was vital to this installation.

The project required five of the rooms to have Mitsubishi ductless wall units installed. Each of these ductless heating and cooling units will be connected to the outdoor heat pump via tubing. The tubing transfers the heated or cooled air from the heat pump to the interior ductless units.

The design of the tubing is not only more efficient at transferring the heated or cooled air through the home, but it is less invasive than standard ductwork. Instead of needing to install ductwork throughout the home, the comfort specialist simply ran the tubing through the walls like electrical wiring.

Outside the home, the Mitsubishi heat pump was mounted on a concrete pad, and all the tubing from the five interior units was connected. All the tubing was then covered with line-hide to create a seamless look on the home’s exterior.
