The owners of this beautiful two-story brownstone loved the location of their home in Boston’s South End. The historic home was a perfect fit for their family, but it lacked central air conditioning like many of the houses in the area.
The family had resorted to using window ACs to try to keep the home comfortable in the summertime. Unfortunately, window ACs are noisy, inefficient, costly to run, and block the home’s windows. The family also found that there were still hot and cold spots throughout the house while using the window air conditioning units.
Fortunately, the brownstone had an electric baseboard heating system that helped fight off the winter chill, but it wasn’t enough to keep the family comfortable. Finally, enough was enough. The owners of this condo were tired of overpaying to keep their home mildly comfortable and were ready for a change that would allow them to enjoy their home all year long.
After researching some options, the owner found that many homeowners in the area are switching to Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps for supplemental heating and air conditioning for homes without a central HVAC system. The Solution: N.E.T.R., Inc., installed a set of Mitsubishi ductless ACs with an outdoor ductless heat pump to provide high-quality air conditioning and supplemental heating throughout the home.
The Design
This two-story home was ready for an upgrade that would make it comfortable for the family all year long. N.E.T.R., Inc., designed a Mitsubishi ductless AC system with a heat pump that would help to keep the home comfortable all year long.
N.E.T.R., Inc., installed a single Mitsubishi ductless wall AC in the bedroom and a second in the living room. These two units were then connected to an outdoor condenser unit with a Mitsubishi heat pump that would transfer the treated air to the units inside the home.
The Installation
These Mitsubishi Electric ductless AC units are easy to install and do not require extensive ductwork to operate. Instead, the technician simply drills a small hole in the wall behind the unit and snakes a thin tubing through the walls to the outdoor condenser. The tubing allows the heat pump to force the air to the AC units as needed without losing much energy in the process.
After both indoor units were installed, the outdoor condenser unit was placed on a poured concrete pad in the back of the house where it would be out of the way but easy to access for maintenance and repairs. The heat pump needs to remain clear of debris and snow to function correctly, which is why the placement of this unit had to be carefully considered. Next, we ran refrigerant lines from both indoor units to the heat pump, and the system was ready to go.
The Benefits
The Mitsubishi ductless air conditioning system is one of the most energy-efficient systems on the market today, so this family will be able to start seeing savings on their energy bills immediately. Each of the ductless ACs requires only about the same amount of energy as a lightbulb to operate. Additionally, the whisper-quiet technology will be a massive improvement over the noisy window AC.
