Amid the pandemic, Moderna Inc. has been working hard to provide relief by developing a vaccine for the Coronavirus. Moderna Inc. is the biotech/pharmaceutical company behind the research and development of the COVID-19 NIAID vaccine. The company spent months studying the virus and preparing this vaccine for public distribution in its Massachusetts facility. During this time, the company decided to build on an addition to their facility specifically for phasing and distributing the vaccine.
The local contractor in charge of the new build installed an electrical room off the main facility to house all the electrical wiring and equipment for the new installation. A local plumbing company was then hired to install the piping and plumbing for the new build.
When it came time to install the cooling system in the electrical room, N.E.T.R., Inc. was brought in. Given N.E.T.R., Inc.’s outstanding work in the past with creating refrigeration systems for all types of companies, our team was the best fit for this job.
Cooling an electrical room is vital to maintaining a safe and optimal working environment for this type of equipment. When an electrical room overheats, it can be a fire hazard, short out the electrical system, or worse. For this job, the team at N.E.T.R., Inc. knew that a Mitsubishi ductless air conditioning system installed directly into the electrical room would provide the perfect temperature and humidity control.
Mitsubishi Electrical ductless AC systems are some of the most energy-efficient air conditioning options on the market today. This ductless installation required two Mitsubishi PUY/PKA series ductless units, refrigeration piping, and all the fittings for the ductless cooling system.
N.E.T.R., Inc. worked with Decco to coordinate the scheduling and installation of the entire electrical room cooling system to ensure that the project was completed on time. This teamwork was vital to keeping the construction on time so that Moderna Inc. could begin distributing the NIAID vaccine as quickly as possible once it was completed.
The condenser unit for the Mitsubishi ductless system was installed on the roof of the building with proper stands and plating to ensure it will be free from obstructions, snow, or debris. This positioning also makes it easy to access for maintenance and repairs in the future.
N.E.T.R. Inc. then installed all the refrigeration piping needed to move the air from the condenser on the roof to the air handlers in the electrical room. Unlike traditional air conditioning systems, the Mitsubishi Electric ductless system does not require massive ductwork to move air. Instead, the refrigeration piping and some tubing are all that is needed to transfer perfectly cooled air.
The team also furnished and installed ZoomLock MAX fittings, instead of the traditional brazed fittings, wherever possible to provide leak-proof refrigerant piping connections. After the indoor air handlers were installed according to the building’s plans, the AC units were connected to the outdoor condenser through the piping and were ready for testing.
N.E.T.R., Inc. performed the system tests to ensure that our installation was leak-proof and ready for operation. The control system was installed in an easy-to-access area so that Moderna Inc. staff can easily adjust the electrical room’s temperature.
After the installation was complete, N.E.T.R., Inc. started up the system and ran all the diagnostics needs to ensure it was working correctly. This process includes pressure testings all of the piping, checking the system for leaks, and evacuating up to 500 microns. Afterward, the refrigerant is refilled, and the system is ready for operation.
Now, Moderna Inc. has a functioning build-out that is ready for distributing the vaccine. Thanks to the combined work of Decco and N.E.T.R., Inc., the project was finished on time, and the electrical room will stay cooled adequately for years to come.
Because of the Mitsubishi ductless system’s incredible energy-efficiency, keeping the electrical room cool will require very little energy, even on the hottest days.
