Somerville three family victorian gets modern comfort with ductless

This beautiful Victorian home in Somerville was converted into homes for three families. It has central heat provided by gas, but they didn't have any ductwork, and all of the families were struggling with using window air conditioners to try to keep the home cool during hot and humid summers. Like many older homes, this Victorian isn't well insulated, and the old wooden windows weren't designed with air conditioners in mind.  Getting the heavy units out each Spring, trying to install them and get adequate insulation around the edges, and hoping there's no water leakage into the walls was a constant concern.  Then there's trying to figure out what weekend in the Fall is the right one to put away the air conditioners- and more often than not, we get a surprise heat wave, making everyone hot under the collar for storing the window units too early. The families knew there had to be a better solution.

After doing their research, they gave us a call here at NETR to learn more about Mitsubishi ductless cooling and if it would be a good fit for their home. They could see that we have had lots of experience in the area and with similar homes, and we knew that we could make sure each family got the comfort they needed, and ensure they would get an efficient system that wouldn't break the bank to run.

Problem: An old Victorian home, converted to serve three families had no cooling and needed a more permanent solution than window units to keep the homes comfortable.

Solution: By adding three zones of Mitsubishi ductless cooling, each family will have the cooling they want, but it will be able to be customized to their own needs, rather than having one unit control the temperature in all the others. This custom solution will ensure every family gets the comfort they need, right where they need it!

Somerville victorian gets perfect comfort with ductlessThe main concern for each family was to get efficient, cost-effective cooling for their individual homes in the building. We  needed to create a system where each unit got the comfort they needed, independent of each other, both to control temperature, but also independently control their energy bills.

We were able to use an outdoor condenser and an indoor, "cassette", wall unit in each area to make sure each home got the comfort they wanted- controlled individually. This also means they would get billed individually, avoiding any problems with dividing bills that can cause messy problems with neighbors. You can see that the outdoor piping into the building matches the trim, preventing it from being too noticeable and doesn't take away from the outside beauty of this home.

As you can see from the picture, each indoor unit is wall mounted, and can but put up out of the way. This means no more window units taking up windows for half the year, and no more wasting a weekend, Spring and Fall, dealing with bulky and noisy air conditioners.

One of the best features of Mitsubishi ductless is that it's incredibly efficient, and can act as both heating and cooling. This means that the families, especially on the upper floor, can also use this system as supplemental heating- taking the chill out of a room with the touch of a button, with increased efficiency as well as safety compared to traditional space heaters. This gives each family the perfect comfort they want, operated by a remote control, without affecting families in other parts of the building. Whether they want it warm or cold, the power in in their hand.Somerville three family victorian gets custom comfort for everyone with ductless

These systems are also incredibly quiet, which is a huge benefit when three families share a single converted home like this one. Everyone will be able to sleep through the night without hearing a large window air conditioner rumble to life, causing vibrations throughout the home. And because the units distribute air throughout a space while monitoring the humidity and temperature, the units will allow the bulk of the condo unit to be effectively cooled with just one wall cassette, although the system is designed to be expandable, should one of the families decide later to add additional cooling to the master bedroom, for example.

We were so happy to be able to help all three of these families get the comfort they wanted, and save them money year round on energy bills.  They will get the efficient, cooling comfort they need during the summer heat, and be able to add a touch of heat when they need it, without turning on the gas heating system for the building. This will make every family in the house happy, without having to worry about what another family is choosing to do.
